Mets' Benge robs Grissom with diving catch in ninth
New York Mets rookie right fielder Carson Benge made a spectacular diving catch on a line drive by Los Angeles Angels second baseman Vaughn Grissom in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday. The grab came with one out and a runner on first at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, preserving a 5-1 Mets victory on May 3, 2026. Benge's play likely saved a run and thwarted an Angels comeback.
The Mets have endured a slump this season with few highlight-reel moments, making Benge's catch stand out. Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen called the play "pulchritudinous," a term meaning breathtaking or beautiful. "I dove still not knowing," Benge told reporters after the game. "But I know I was going to try to make a play for my guys."
Benge went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks at the plate. Starter Clay Holmes allowed one run on four hits, struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.69. The win marked the Mets' 12th of the season.
New York took two of three games in the series, its first series victory since April 23 against the Minnesota Twins.
