Jay Bilas recalls Mike Krzyzewski's method for simplifying NCAA tournament bracket during 1986 Duke run

Jay Bilas, a forward on the 1982-1986 Duke Blue Devils teams and current ESPN college basketball analyst, described how head coach Mike Krzyzewski simplified the pressure of the expanded NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament for his players.[1][2]

Speaking in a recent interview, Bilas said Krzyzewski, in Bilas's senior year of 1986, focused the team on smaller segments of the bracket. The tournament had expanded to a 64-team field in 1985, making 1986 its second year in that format.[3][4]

Krzyzewski presented the opening weekend as a four-team bracket dubbed the "Greensboro Invitational," where Duke was hosting its first- and second-round games at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.[1][5]

Duke defeated Mississippi Valley State 85-78 in the first round on March 14 and West Virginia 63-70 in the second round on March 16.[5][6]

For the regional semifinals and final at Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Krzyzewski called it the "Meadowlands Invitational." Duke beat DePaul 77-70 on March 20 before edging Navy -- led by future NBA star David Robinson -- 71-67 on March 22 to advance to the Final Four.[5][6]

Duke lost to LSU 76-72 in the national semifinals on March 29 at the Dallas Memorial Coliseum.[5][6] Bilas credited the approach with helping the team stay focused, noting he remembers little else from that tournament.[1]
