John Wall Named Howard Basketball Operations President

John Wall, the former No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, has returned to Washington as president of basketball operations at Howard University. Officials at the historically Black university in Washington, D.C., confirmed the appointment to ESPN on Thursday. Wall began his NBA career with the Washington Wizards, spending his first nine seasons there.

Howard's program has emerged as a standout at the NCAA Division I level, advancing to the tournament three times in the past four years. The Bison secured their first tournament victory in March with a First Four win over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, marking a rare achievement for an HBCU and mid-major program. Wall served as the team's honorary captain on Jan. 31.

Wall earned five consecutive All-Star selections during his career. He played one season with the Houston Rockets after leaving the Wizards and appeared in 34 games for the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2022-23 season, his last in the NBA. He retired in August 2025 and has expressed interest in NBA front-office roles.

Wall already participates in team meetings, evaluates recruits, identifies transfer targets and shapes the program's strategic vision, including mentoring players and name, image and likeness deals, according to ESPN. He will work closely with Howard general manager Daniel Marks and coach Kenny Blakeney. His appointment echoes recent moves by active NBA players Stephen Curry, named assistant general manager at Davidson College, and Trae Young, who took a similar role at Oklahoma.
